Canada Election 2025 Markham Councillor Criticizes Conservatives and Liberals for Secretive Candidate Selections

With just days remaining before the federal election, Markham Regional Councillor Joe Li has taken a public stand against what he calls undemocratic practices by both the Conservative and Liberal parties in the Markham riding.

At a news conference held on April 16 by the Chinese Canadian Conservative Association (CCCA) — where Li serves as national chair — the long-time Conservative Party member voiced concern over the parties’ decisions to handpick local candidates behind closed doors, bypassing open nomination processes.

Li emphasized that the CCCA remains committed to the core Canadian values of democracy, unity, and inclusion, and expressed disappointment that these principles are being undermined in one of the country’s most diverse communities.
