The Hong Kong Entrepreneurs Chamber of Commerce (Canada) (HKECC) celebrated its inaugural gala, The Lilium Ball: Chapter Zero, at the Marriott Hotel in Markham on May 11. This event marked a significant milestone, celebrating the chamber’s heritage and its contributions to Canadian society over the past two years.
Founding and Mission of HKECC
Founded in November 2022, the HKECC aims to unite and empower Hong Kong entrepreneurs and professionals in Canada, fostering a thriving community that upholds and contributes to Canada’s core values. “The Lilium Ball represents the resilience, adaptability, and collective spirit of our community,” said Allan Tam, chair of HKECC. “Today, our network includes over 200 members from various industries, all committed to mutual support and professional excellence.”
The Need for a Community Platform
Since 2019, Canada has witnessed a significant influx of immigrants from Hong Kong. This new wave joined the already established Hong Kong immigrant communities, highlighting a pressing need for a platform where these individuals can connect, share experiences, and support one another as they adapt to their new lives in Canada.
Informal Gatherings to Formal Organization
Established Hong Kong immigrants in Canada responded to this need by initiating a series of informal gatherings. Starting with lunch meetings, these events provided a space for both new and long-standing immigrants to network and exchange stories and advice. These lunches were more than just social gatherings; they served as the foundation for a growing community, offering a sense of belonging and a network of support. As these gatherings gained popularity, the group saw remarkable growth, evolving into a dynamic community keen on exploring business opportunities and collaborations. This evolution underscored the necessity for a more structured and formal approach to harness the community’s potential. In response to this momentum, the group officially registered as a federal non-profit organization with a mission to empower Canadian Hongkongers by fostering a community that thrives and significantly contributes to Canada and its values.
Supporting Entrepreneurs and Community Initiatives
HKECC now supports entrepreneurs from Hong Kong who have relocated to Canada through a range of activities, including networking events, community initiatives, educational workshops, seminars, and cultural celebrations. These efforts help them succeed and contribute meaningfully to Canadian society, Tam emphasized.
