Markham-Unionville MP Paul Chiang Withdraws from Election Amid Controversy

Paul Chiang, the Liberal MP for Markham-Unionville, has announced his withdrawal from the 2025 federal election following intense backlash over controversial remarks. The decision, made public just before midnight on March 31, comes as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) investigates allegations related to his comments.

The Controversy

In January, during a news conference with Chinese-language media, Chiang suggested that individuals could claim a HK$1 million bounty (approximately CA$183,000) by delivering his Conservative rival, Joe Tay, to the Chinese Consulate in Toronto. Tay, a former Hong Kong activist and current Conservative candidate for Don Valley North, is wanted under Hong Kong’s national security law for his criticism of Beijing. The remarks drew widespread condemnation from human rights organizations and political opponents, who accused Chiang of encouraging illegal activity and transnational repression.

Apology and Resignation

Chiang apologized for what he called “deplorable” comments, acknowledging a lapse in judgment. However, mounting pressure from opposition parties and civil society groups led to his decision to step down. In his resignation statement on social media, Chiang wrote, “As the Prime Minister and Team Canada work to stand up to President Trump and protect our economy, I do not want there to be distractions in this critical moment. That’s why I’m standing aside as our 2025 candidate in our community of Markham-Unionville.”

Broader Implications

The RCMP confirmed it is investigating whether Chiang’s remarks violated Canadian laws, including potential breaches of the Foreign Interference and Security of Information Act. Prime Minister Mark Carney faced calls to remove Chiang from the Liberal ticket but defended him initially as having made a “teachable moment” mistake. However, Chiang’s withdrawal now leaves the Liberals searching for a replacement candidate ahead of the April 7 nomination deadline.

This incident underscores growing concerns about foreign interference in Canada’s political landscape and highlights the challenges of addressing transnational repression within
