Even before its doors open, Mon Sheong Foundation’s newest long-term care centre in Stouffville already has a waitlist—and it’s growing.
Scheduled to open in July 2025, the Mon Sheong Dr. Paul Woo Long-Term Care Centre, located at 168 Sandiford Dr., has begun accepting resident applications through Ontario Health atHome. Seniors in need of long-term care—and their families—are encouraged to apply early, as demand is expected to be high.
And for good reason.
Meeting an Urgent Need
“We have over 8,500 people on the waitlist for our existing four homes,” said Tim Kwan, chairman of the Mon Sheong Foundation. “This new centre is a critical addition to help ease the pressure.”
The new facility marks Mon Sheong’s second care home in Stouffville, following the 2021 opening of its first centre in the town. Construction on this latest project began in fall 2023, and impressively, it’s on track to finish by May 2025—a full year ahead of schedule.
What’s Inside the New Centre?
Spanning eight storeys and housing 224 care beds, the new facility isn’t just large—it’s thoughtfully designed.
Each room will feature individual heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) units, allowing residents to control their personal comfort levels—a small detail that makes a big difference, especially for seniors with specific health needs.
The centre will also incorporate enhanced infection prevention and control systems, a must-have in the post-pandemic era.
A First in Ontario Long-Term Care Design
In a notable upgrade, both basic and private accommodations will include ensuite washrooms—a feature that sets this centre apart in Ontario. While this design choice does raise construction costs and reduce room capacity, the benefit is clear: greater privacy and safety for every resident.
As Kwan noted, “We believe in building for dignity, not just capacity.”
How to Apply
Applications are managed through Ontario Health atHome, whose care coordinators will assess each applicant’s eligibility and care needs. They’ll also guide families through the application process, making it easier to navigate what is often an emotional and complex decision.
